Archaeologists Discover Ancient Stone Depicting Roman Emperor
Tiberius as Pharaoh
Archaeologists in Egypt have uncovered an ancient sandstone
monument that depicts the Roman emperor Tiberius as a pharaoh
at Karnak Temple, a discovery that sheds light on how imperial
rule was presented in one of the country’s most important
religious centers.
The sandstone stela was found during restoration work at the
northern gate of the enclosure wall built by King Ramesses III
north of the Karnak temples in Luxor. Egypt’s Ministry of
Tourism and Antiquities said the monument dates to the reign
of Tiberius, who ruled from A.D. 14 to 37.
. . .
It's in pretty good condition.
In any case, 'propaganda' goes WAY WAY back. Wasn't
long after coins were invented that royals had their
faces stamped on them. A gold dinar could travel
halfway across the world to advertise "THIS guy
is an IMPORTANT guy !".
For conquered Egypt, the image of Tiberius as Pharaoh
would have had much significance, a bold statement. The
Egyptian pharaohs put up great monuments and statues
and frescoes dedicated to themselves, some still survive.
They also had a penchant for erasing previous leaders
from history.
